In Schroon Lake, you can walk from Main Street down to the public waterfront, catch a movie at the Strand, or head out to Mt. Severance for a view of the lake. Summer brings beach days and concerts. In fall, the calendar and the available facilities change.
The short version
- Start with Main Street, the Town Park and the library.
- October 17 brings a community festival and a Seagle cabaret.
- Beach and campground amenities are seasonal; choose boat access accordingly.
- For a home, compare specific addresses and documented lake access.
October 2026 update
Updated October 10, 2026. On Saturday, October 17, the Fall for Schroon Festival & Car Show starts with cars at 10 a.m.; family activities run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Chamber lists live music, food trucks and children’s activities.
That evening, Seagle Festival presents The Ladies of Phantom at 7:30 p.m. in the Overlook Room at The Lodge at Schroon Lake. Follow the organizer’s page for tickets.
Main Street and the public waterfront
The beach sits below Main Street in the Town Park, with lawn above the sand and views across the water. Leland Avenue and Dock Street lead toward the waterfront; the public boat launch is beside the Boat House Theater.
October is outside the Town’s published swimming season, which runs from the last week of June through Labor Day and depends on lifeguard availability. Plan a fall waterfront visit without expecting summer beach services.
Fishing through the seasons
Schroon Lake supports lake trout, landlocked salmon, bass and other species. Read the current Region 5 fishing rules for the species and season you have in mind. Ice fishing is permitted, but that permission says nothing about ice conditions.
Scaroon Manor has a fishing and viewing platform, picnic facilities and a hand launch. DEC lists its operating season as May 15 through September 7; those amenities and rentals should not be assumed available in October.
Choose a launch for your boat
For trailered boats, DEC lists hard-surface ramps at Dock Street near the hamlet and at Horicon on Glendale Road near Pottersville. Their listed parking capacities are 15 and 45 cars with trailers, respectively. Eagle Point’s smaller launch operates with its campground.
Before a motorboat outing, review New York’s safety-certificate requirements. Follow Clean, Drain, Dry procedures, including the required Adirondack motorized-watercraft certification. Wear a fitted life jacket and check weather and access conditions.
Movies, music and theater
The Strand Theatre, at 1102 US Route 9, is Main Street’s Art Deco movie and performance venue. Seagle Festival stages opera and musical theater through its summer training program, with additional performances such as October’s cabaret. The Schroon Lake Arts Council organizes Schroon Lake Live!! and the Adirondack Folk Festival. Its summer season has concluded; use the organizations’ own listings for upcoming shows.
The view from Mt. Severance
Mt. Severance is 1.2 miles from trailhead to summit, with 740 feet of climbing. The out-and-back walk is about 2.4 miles. The trail passes beneath the Northway before climbing to views of Schroon Lake and the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. Allow for the ascent and descent, and read DEC’s backcountry notices for current conditions.
A stop at the library
The Schroon Lake Public Library, at 15 Leland Avenue, offers a community room, Wi-Fi, computers and programs alongside its collections. Temporary adult residents can request a courtesy borrowing card for their stay, with identification and registration. For a longer visit, that is a useful connection to town.
Where visitors come from
ROOST’s 2025 Essex County survey found 68% of respondents came from New York and 23% from other Northeastern states, with 2% each from Quebec and Ontario. It covers tourism-marketing respondents visiting the county, not Schroon Lake alone.
The 2025 Adirondack Marathon survey lists Albany–Schenectady–Troy, New York City and Burlington–Plattsburgh among leading source markets. Its 52 responses describe an event audience. Neither report establishes a lake-wide visitor profile or a long-term trend.
Choosing a home’s setting
Schroon Lake stretches roughly nine miles through the towns of Schroon, Chester and Horicon, across Essex and Warren counties. A home near Main Street, a wooded property and a place near the south-end launch offer different daily routines.
Try the routes to groceries, the library and the water. Walk any route you expect to use, including its crossings and slopes. For waterfront or shared access, have the deed and access documents reviewed. A nearby public beach does not establish private rights. Our New York buyer guide covers the broader purchase process.
