Sustainable Saratoga’s paint collection day was October 17, but you do not have to wait for another local event to look for a place to recycle eligible leftover paint. The organizer points residents to PaintCare’s New York drop-off program, which lists year-round sites.
Start by sorting what is in the garage or basement. PaintCare accepts certain architectural coatings; that does not make every container from a home project eligible.
Check the product and container
PaintCare lists house paint, primers, stains, sealers and clear coatings such as shellac and varnish among its accepted products. Its product guide excludes aerosol coatings, solvents and products designed and labeled for industrial or other non-architectural uses. Use the detailed guide if the label is unclear.
Eligible products must be in their original containers no larger than five gallons, with the manufacturer’s original printed label and a secured lid. Open or leaking cans are not accepted. The site locator also says sites do not accept empty or unlabeled containers. Do not pour different materials together to make them fit.
Find a site and call before loading the car
Use the PaintCare site finder to identify a convenient location. PaintCare says its sites accept up to five gallons per visit, with some taking more. Call ahead to confirm hours and whether the location can take your particular products and quantity. Accepted program products carry no additional charge when dropped off at a PaintCare site.
The October 17 event page also points to other options for materials outside the program. Its event-specific list and a year-round site’s capacity are separate things, so check before making a trip.
If you plan to keep a small amount for future touch-ups, identify the room and color on your own records and keep the original labeled container in suitable storage. For the rest, use the current program guidance to identify an appropriate destination.
