Your Saratoga School Tax Bill: What to Check This September

Before you pay your school tax bill, check three things: the property it covers, the exemptions it includes, and who is responsible for sending the payment. A few minutes with this year’s bill and your mortgage records can help you catch a problem before the first installment is due.

This guide covers Saratoga Springs City School District’s 2026–27 tax year. Other districts have their own payment schedules. Sources checked September 12, 2026.

The short version

  • The first penalty-free installment deadline is October 5, 2026.
  • Confirm the parcel, exemptions, and payment responsibility before paying.
  • A STAR credit arrives separately; an exemption reduces the bill.

First, mark the two installment deadlines

The district sends one bill in early September with two installment stubs. You can pay in full or in two installments. For 2026–27, the first deadline moves to October 5 because October 4 falls on a Sunday. The district’s weekend rule gives taxpayers until the next business day. March 4 is the final collection date, not extra time to pay without penalty.

Find your bill and confirm the district

Go to Info-Tax Online and select Saratoga Springs CSD. Search by last name or street address, leaving the other fields blank, then open the matching parcel. The Tax Amount is the full annual tax. Review the payment schedule for the installment amounts.

Check the school district on the record, even if your mailing address says Saratoga Springs. If you own more than one parcel, review each bill.

Check what changed on your bill

Put this year’s bill beside last year’s. Match the owner, property and mailing addresses, and parcel number, often labeled SBL. Then compare the assessed value, taxable assessment, and exemptions. A change in the total is easier to understand once you find the line that changed.

The taxable assessment is the assessed value after applicable exemptions. Your purchase price does not replace that figure in the tax calculation. New York’s calculation guide explains how the assessment and rate determine the tax.

Bring assessment or exemption questions to your city or town assessor, with both bills and a description of the discrepancy. Reviewing a September bill does not reopen the annual grievance period. Ask which correction process and deadline apply; the state’s assessment guidance is a useful starting point.

Use the rate for your municipality

The 2026–27 district rates separate school and library taxes. Find your municipality below and use the taxable assessment that applies to each charge.

Each rate is per $1,000 of taxable assessed value. Rates alone cannot tell you which town has the lower tax bill for a comparable home, because assessment levels and exemptions also affect the calculation.

Make sure you and your servicer agree on who pays

If your mortgage payment includes an escrow account for property taxes, confirm that your servicer has this bill and has scheduled payment. This matters especially after a refinance, servicing transfer, or mortgage payoff.

Ask for the parcel number, payment amounts, and scheduled dates. Keep the written confirmation, then check that the payment appears after processing. If you now pay the taxes yourself, put both installment deadlines on your calendar.

If responsibility is unclear, contact the servicer and district tax office before sending a separate payment. Resolve the question early enough to avoid a missed deadline or duplicate payment.

Know how your STAR benefit reaches you

A STAR exemption reduces your school tax bill. A STAR credit comes separately from New York State, by check or direct deposit. Eligible new homeowners register for the credit. Basic and Enhanced describe benefit levels; either is separate from the question of how you receive it. The STAR resource center and Basic and Enhanced guidance explain the options.

One figure deserves particular care: for 2026–27, the state’s Saratoga County table lists Basic and Enhanced exemption amounts of $15,300 and $43,900 for the City of Saratoga Springs. These are amounts of assessed value exempted from tax, not check amounts or dollar-for-dollar tax savings. Do not subtract them from your bill. Actual savings depend on the state’s calculation and savings limits.

Bought your home recently?

A seller’s STAR exemption may still appear on your first bill. That does not register you for future benefits. New York uses ownership on July 1 to determine credit eligibility, with first-year exceptions explained in its new-homeowner FAQ. Check your purchase date and registration.

Waiting for a STAR payment?

Review your registration, benefit type, and direct-deposit details in the Homeowner Benefit Portal. Use the STAR resource center’s payment lookup to check issuance status. Your school taxes remain due on time even if the credit has not arrived.

You cannot receive both a STAR exemption and credit for the same year. Credit direct deposits go to a personal checking or savings account, not your mortgage escrow account.

Keep the bill, the answers, and the receipt

For billing or escrow-record questions, contact the district tax office at 518-693-1455 or Tax_office@saratogaschools.org. Submit mailing-address changes in writing and update your assessor’s records too. Follow the district’s payment instructions, including its U.S. postmark requirements.

Save the bill, any written answers, and your receipt together. When the second installment comes due, you will have the record you need without starting over.
